HOW TO BE RUSSIAN ETIQUETTE

FOR TOURISTS.

Greeting people.

Russian people greet each other since  the most ancient times asking; "How  are you?". This is a question and  people answer it talking about their recent  news. The way of a greeting depends  on age of the person. Young people,  teenagers and children use in the speech  "Hello!" much more often. People  who are not know you very well, can  use Hello and Hi, nut in Russian  it is another word to tell to older  people. It is also possible to say  "Good morning", "Good afternoon"  or "Good evening". Often we use  such phrases as "It is glad you  to see!", "What pleasant meeting!"  "What surprise!", "Whom I see!".

Most people don’t like physical contact.  Never hug or kiss person, who are  not your close friend. Handshakes are  OK. But it is not bad if you  kiss or hug your very close friend.

Making a small talk.

When you see person for the first  time I advise you to avoid serious  topics. Private topics are also banned. 

It’s safe to talk about weather or  sport. But try to be as polite, as  you can. If you talk about sport  teams don’t talk bad about partner’s  favorite team. He can get angry.

Public transport.

Using public transport always be polite.  People should ledge seats for older passengers  or children.

Don’t leave rubbish in the transport.

Queuing.

Queues are everywhere in Russia. There  are some advises to be polite there. 

1.Some people can jump the queue, but  don’t do it. If people get angry,  you can have problems.

2.Don’t be rude with people. If you  are, read 1st paragraph.

3.If you miss your turn, don’t try  to jump the queue, go to the end.  If you don’t want, read 1^st paragraph.
