Financial ( depository) institutions are usually classified by the number and kinds of services they offer . There are several types of banks – commercial ( full – service ) banks offer a full range of financial services . They handle checking accounts , make loans to individuals and to businesses , provide a variety of other services , which are handled in different departments , such as a savings department , a trust department , a real estate department , or an invesstment department . Such banks are usually called financial department stores .
