John Cabot, an Italian sea captain in the pay of the British, discovered Can-ada in 1497, five years after Columbus discovered America. He planted a huge cross on the shore and sailed home, with the news that he had reached north east China , the land of the Great Khan , and that the sea was full of fish.

La comida española es típicamente mediterránea. Predominan platos picantes y no muy fuertes. El vinagre, el aceite de oliva y las aceitunas son sus ingredientes constantes. El vino se aprecia muchísimo, aunque hay jóvenes que prefieren la cerveza. A algunos les gusta la sangría, una mezcla de vino tinto y de zumo de frutas. Aunque es un invento puramente español, es muy popular entre los extranjeros. De todas las cocinas regionales se destacan la vasca, la gallega y la valenciana: las dos primeras por sus mariscos (productos del mar) y la tercera por la muy conocida paella. Sin embargo, estas cocinas cuentan con muchos otros platos que son una auténtica delicia.

Initially the Calgary Branch of the University of Alberta in the first half of the 20th century, the University of Calgary separated from the University of Alberta, and was founded in 1966. The University of Calgary, or "U of C", is composed of 16 faculties including a teachers' college, law school, and medical school. In 2008 the University of Calgary opened a veterinary school bringing the number of faculties to 17. The campus is in the north-west quadrant of Calgary.

In 1534 , the French explorer, Jacques Cartier, sailed right down the St.Lawrence River until he could go no further. Among the great forests along the shore he met Indians who welcomed him, but in return he kidnapped some of their chiefs . He was the first European to treat the Indians with cruelty and treachery. It was almost another hundred years before French colonists settled on the banks of the St Lawrence and founded Quebec. They were sent there to give food and shelter to the French fur traders, who were carrying on a profitable trade with the Indians.

A very broad range of restructuring options for Social Security has been discussed over the past decade. The Clinton administration proposed allowing investment of Social Security surpluses in equities markets to increase returns, in addition to a system of supplemental individual retirement sayings accounts. At the beginning of his second term, George W. Bush proposed a major initiative to allow individuals to partially opt out of Social Security into a system of funded individual accounts. Even though Bush has significant majorities both chambers of Congress, the political sensitivity of Social Security and the absence of an immediate funding crisis make passage of a major reform package very much an uphill battle.
